    Amazon.com Review:
Catechism of the Catholic Church is the first new edition of the catechism in 400 years. Catechism means "instruction," and this text will remain the standard reference for Catholics for many future generations. It is the authoritative summary of Catholic belief regarding the Church creeds, sacraments, commandments, and prayers. To get some idea of the level of detail with which the Catechism engages Catholic doctrine, consider that 17 pages of explanation accompany the opening words of the Apostle's Creed ("I Believe in God the Father"). The book is exceptionally well organized, with line-by-line explanations of every conceivable aspect of orthodox Catholic belief. Extensive cross-referencing, indexing, footnotes, and "In Brief" summaries of each section further ease the project of finding the precise answers to any questions a reader might have. Even the layout of information on the page is easy on the eyes, with wide margins for readers who wish to make notes. Furthermore, the back cover features a true rarity in the annals of world literature: a blurb by the Pope. --Michael Joseph Gross

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition

Anyone wanting to know the real teachings of the Catholic Church - that all Catholics are REQUIRED to believe - should read the "Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition".

It covers all matters of Faith and Morals, and is the authentic reference text with footnotes to the Bible.

People can choose to be Catholic, but Catholics can not choose what they want to believe. Nothing is optional regarding beliefs in this CCC as stated in FAQs by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops on their web site.

This is must reading for all Catholics aged 16 and over, those considering joining the Catholic Church, and those who want the TRUTH about the Catholic Church's real beliefs - rather than hearsay or what they read in the media by unschooled journalists or misinformed Christians (including misinformed Catholic politicians).

Journalists and Politicians should also read it since there are groups who perport to call themselves Catholic and are not.
If a person or organization does not adhere to all the teachings in this Catechism, they are not Catholic or are Catholic heritics.
Nothing can be taken out of context for the Truth.

This is 5 star all the way.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wondrous and Inspiring
In a sense, the Catechism pre-dates the New Testament. The first followers already knew the events described in the Gospels and Acts either firsthand or from word of mouth, before they were recorded. What was conducted in the early church is exactly what the CCC does today - explain, teach, and expound on those events and what they mean to us. The CCC, in effect, is like an extended epistle to the faithful. Teaching, exhortation, and instruction on the Word of God.

There are many helpful reviews already posted here, so I'll identify one aspect that makes the Catechism such a precious deposit of our Faith.

I love how familiar prayers like the Apostle's Creed and The Our Father are deconstructed to teach what Catholics believe. Look at the table of contents - nearly all of Sections 1 and 2 of Part One are dedicated to the Profession of Faith. This is not picayune, arcane theology. This is core, "meat and potatoes" food for the Catholic mind in a truly Thomistic sense:

"Man's salvation consists in knowing the truth, so that the human mind may not be confused by divers errors; in making for the right goal, so that man may not fall away from true happiness by pursuing wrong ends; and in carrying out the law of justice, so that he may not besmirch himself with a multitude of vices."

To demonstrate what I mean above about how it teaches us using the Creed and the Our Father, here's an edited outline of the first couple of Sections from the table of contents. Each heading listed here has much more detail below it, but this shows you the methodical approach it takes:

ARTICLE 1: "I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH"
    Paragraph 2. The Father
    Paragraph 3. The Almighty
    Paragraph 4. The Creator
    Paragraph 5. Heaven and Earth

ARTICLE 2: "AND IN JESUS CHRIST, HIS ONLY SON, OUR LORD"
ARTICLE 3: "HE WAS CONCEIVED BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND WAS BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY"
ARTICLE 4: "JESUS CHRIST SUFFERED UNDER PONTIUS PILATE, WAS CRUCIFIED, DIED, AND WAS BURIED"
ARTICLE 5: "HE DESCENDED INTO HELL ON THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN"
ARTICLE 6: "HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER"
ARTICLE 7: "FROM THENCE HE WILL COME AGAIN"
TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD"

CHAPTER THREE: I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
ARTICLE 9: "I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH"
Paragraph 5. The Communion of Saints
ARTICLE 10: "I BELIEVE IN THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS"
ARTICLE 11: "I BELIEVE IN THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY"
ARTICLE 12: "I BELIEVE IN LIFE EVERLASTING"

Like a great poem, our Faith has no wasted words or punctuation. Everything in our Faith - the sacraments, the prayers, the liturgy - have a specific purpose, and it all ties back into the Bible and the Early Church. I love our Catholic Faith now, more than ever. What a truly beautiful bride. If you're Catholic, you really should get this book. Spend time with it - understand and internalize it. It'll enrich you Faith, strengthen your Hope, and fill you with Charity.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Informative Book
We purchased this book as a reference for a religious class we were taking about the Catholic Church. It is very informative and explains the teaching of the Catholic Church in great detail.
